4. Smear campaign you
The narcissist changes the narrative of what actually happened, and becomes the victim of you, and starts a nasty and untruthful smear campaign against you. Typically, they will say that they actually dumped you and that you are guilty of doing all of the terrible and nasty things that they are actually guilty of doing to you. I always tell my clients to expect a nasty smear campaign because, unfortunately, this is a very probable outcome for most victims of narcissistic abuse when they get out of the relationship, whether they discarded the narcissist or the narcissist discarded them.
You have to remember, the narcissist has to take every situation that they find themselves in and turn the narrative into one that makes them the hero, the victim, or the martyr, or some combination of all three, so you might as well brace yourself for this one. However, do not engage, do not defend yourself, do not take the bait. Keep your head held high and maintain no contact. If there are people who are dumb enough to believe the smear campaign against you, they weren’t really your friend, to begin with.
