Well, in all likelihood, you may trigger a narcissistic injury because the narcissist is probably gonna think to themselves: how dare you? Who are you to tell me anything? Now you may have a PhD and the narcissist may have a GED, but the narcissist is skilled in achieving their own ends by deception and manipulation.
And once they’ve fooled you into taking them seriously, they lose all respect for you because they know they’re full of it. So they see themselves as above you and your request for them to change their ways because of how it’s affecting you will be seen as an act of insubordination that must be punished.

Some narcissists will be acting mediately, without Rage insults and turning the criticism around on you, they’ll berate you and devalue you with both gloves off, because, in their minds, you shouldn’t have the audacity to try to tell them anything ever.
Other narcissists, especially the covert ones, are more mischievous. So if someone they’ve been dominating, were to suggest that they change or try to improve their behavior in order to meet their needs, they’ll have a passive-aggressive response. They’re more likely to punish that person by faking an epiphany only to use it as an underhanded way to exploit and humiliate the target.
