 Narcissists love “future faking.” This means promising to do something in the future in order to get what they want in the present. It can be as simple as promising to call back or in a workplace, promising to put a good word in for you if you help them clear their workload. They notice what you want and they promise to fulfill that to string you along in the now. Surprisingly, it works.
