Covert narcissists are sneaky in getting their wants because they are careful not to expose their narcissism. One of their sneaky ways is triangulation. Triangulation enables covert narcissists to convey the drama, control, or anything they want without direct self-involvement. Narcissists may bring in a third party to do the dirty work, then the covert narcissists act as an intermediary between the third party and the person they wanted to control or maybe discard.
For instance, if you are subject to a covert narcissist’s envy, the narcissist may want to dump you, but the narcissist will never directly confront you. Instead, they will bring a third party in and start a fight between you two behind your backs. The narcissist will add fire to the flame from time to time while quietly satisfying oneself on the sideline
Lastly, bonus: Covert narcissists make and break promises.
Covert narcissists may set other people’s hopes up, and then eventually break them down. Suppose you are in a relationship with a covert narcissist, they may express love to you, promise to take you out on a date but never show up, and justify themselves with many excuses. Promise you another one as a way of making up only to repeat what she or he did the last time, then we’ll make more and more promises only to break them again and again.

This is the covert narcissist’s way of devaluing you or telling you that you are not worthy of love or anything. Eventually, you’ll leave when you get tired of hearing their rehearsed excuses, but your leaving will be viewed as inconsiderate because you did not try to understand, accept, and support the narcissist’s excuses, or may accuse you of not exerting any effort to make the relationship work.
Covert narcissists are the type of narcissists whom we call low-key. They do not expressly and directly show their practice of narcissism. However, this does not change that covert narcissists are narcissists from head to toe.
