First of all, there is the issue of the Narcissist projecting their insecurities, bad intentions, negative emotions, etc… onto others. In other words, they separate or deny the negative things they do and attribute them to someone else. But also, the Narcissist genuinely thinks that the people around them are out to get them. They believe others’ schemes, cheat and lie as much as they do. So, they believe they have to constantly be on guard from an impending threat that, in many cases, doesn’t really exist, but in the Narcissist’s mind, it is very real.
Why Do They View You As A Threat?
It’s all thanks to the fact that Narcissists suffer from Paranoia. Paranoia refers to an extreme and unreasonable feeling that other people do not like you or are going to harm or criticize you. I know this is something other people can suffer from as well but I am only dealing with Narcissists right now.
And with Narcissists, this paranoia is usually kept hidden quite well until you get close enough to them and you realize how much they devalue and distrust people. In public, they may make snide or sarcastic comments in jest, but the Narcissist is revealing exactly how they feel. But many times, people are convinced that they are just joking. And it’s because Many Narcissists use humor as an excuse to be mean or devalue someone.

For them, it is all a part of the game that they think everyone is a part of. Who can outsmart who? Who can deceive more, manipulate and take the most? They think everyone is like them; two-faced, fake, constantly scheming, looking for ways to take advantage of others, opportunistic, manipulators, and liars.
Therefore, in the mind of the Narcissist, it is about always having the upper hand. It is about beating their opponents. It is about not letting their guard down. It is about getting everyone to trust them while they trust no one. It is about who can play this game better. Because after all in, the mind of the Narcissist, everyone thinks like they do and are looking to cheat them and defeat them.
