4. Praise
Praise or flattery is the fourth thing that can make a narcissist happy. Narcissists love to have their egos boosted and massaged, so this one, if all else fails, is a must. Praise from their peers is good, but the narcissist can take this for granted if there is a more love tear source that they can get it from. This is why, even in relationships where the narcissist stops responding to your compliments, it’s because they are getting it from somewhere else. From someone who they think is of much more value than you at the moment.
What I need to emphasize though is that the narcissist is happiest when the praise or recognition is coming from someone who has more money or more power than they do, as they want to be seen to be rubbing shoulders with the most influential people. So in these instances, the narcissist will do whatever is necessary to stay in the good graces of this person as it could mean more money or power for them.
So in the workplace, the narcissist will pull out all the stops to impress the manager or director. In the church, they want to catch the eye of the pastor or other church leaders. Romantically, that new supply can get the narcissist to do just about anything or a compliment. Basically, with the narcissist, it’s whoever is most significant at that point in time when the flattery will be most effective.
narcissists love to be flattered. So if your flattery is not getting the narcissist to respond in a positive way, it’s because they don’t value you, it’s that simple.
