They might tell you that a friend or family member is mistreating them, and then blame you for not standing up against your loved one and taking their side. Or maybe they’ll tell you that their boss is mistreating them and making you feel terrible for not doing anything about it. This is just one way that narcissists can manipulate people into doing things for them, and it’s one way we can stop ourselves from falling into this trap.

Some of those rules might be: “You can’t talk to my family.” “You can’t hang out with your friends without me, or “you can’t talk about me behind my back.” Narcissists can be very unpredictable from moment to moment. Hence, it’s hard to know what to expect from them or what behavior will come next.

Narcissists think they’re always right and that everyone else is wrong, even if there’s no evidence. Narcissists are masters of manipulation; they will make you feel that they are always right; they love being in control so they will use their words to think that their way is the only way. If you disagree with them or try to assert your own needs and desires, they will use their words to convince you that you are wrong and get you to do what they want. Assess and know what to look for.
A narcissist playing you can be subtle, but a few tell-tale ways to identify one early on. The less obvious are the little things that narcissists do. Again, all the advice in the world probably won’t change their behaviour. Still, it will make you aware of it to defend yourself against their manipulation and control.
