 1. Distorted sense of self.

BPD creates a critically twisted and relentless instability of their impression of self. Not understanding who you are as a person is potentially a dangerous attribute because it leads to a term called “mirroring.”

Mirroring is the practice of taking on the image and traits that are not their own, but the complication with that is the true self will always surface. Who a person is will always emerge, and when that happens, symptoms can be catastrophic to the person and the surrounding relationships.

A person can only mimic another person’s behavior for so long, and often this is based on their need for love and acceptance of others. Individuals who suffer from BPD have difficulty sustaining long-term relationships because their moods become more erratic as they mirror the individuals. They attempt to be part of the conversation because they are trying to give the opposite of the symptom: which is anti-social behavior and the appearance of rudeness. This behavior attributes to the need for acceptance. When they do not receive that reassurance, the behaviors turn more erratic, creating a more significant issue.
