First of all, because they discarded you, the turnaround time may be longer before they come knocking on your door. And also, in some very rare cases, the narcissists may never come back because for the very fact that they are the ones who discarded you, they know how much they’ve broken you. But, if you are able to turn things around, that opinion of the narcissist can change, so that would be the first reason why a narcissist would come back after they discarded you.
If you are able to recover from the discard and build yourself back up and are doing well, the narcissists will want a piece of that action. They realize that there is more they can get from you, and because they know they were successful with getting you before, they believe they can easily do so again. They want to benefit from any success that you are getting in your life, but only to dry you out and then move on again.

Secondly, it could be that the narcissist has fallen on hard times, and being with you will put them in a better place than where they are right now, or it could be the new supply may not have worked out the way that they hoped and they see you as like a pit stop until the next victim comes along. And again, because they were with you before, they believe they can easily manipulate you into taking them back no matter how bad the discard was.
Narcissists act like they have amnesia, and that for whatever reason, we should forget all the evil and hurt that they have caused and pretend like we were always good mates or something. They would use their gift of gab to charm us and convince us that they are worth being given a second chance.
