Number 3. Never trust a liar.
A defining factor of toxic people is that they’re compulsive liars. They will do mental gymnastics to keep you caught up in their lie and lie as many times as they need to keep you in their hole. If you find out that one of your friends has been lying to you, then don’t let your guard down near them ever again. Friends and loved ones don’t lie to each other.
Lying is wrong and an absolute violation of your trust. Never trust a liar and never let yourself fall under the illusion that a liar has changed themselves just because they said so. People change, yes, and they do deserve second chances, but if you’re going to just blindly trust someone that you caught lying in the past, then you’re just fooling yourself. Always be careful when you’re with people that you’ve caught lying or think are lying to you.
Number 2. Put yourself first.
You come first. You matter. And you prioritizing your mental health because you feel drained and empty doesn’t make you selfish. If you’re not in the right mental space, you can’t be there for anyone. In a healthy relationship, your friend and partner would recognize that and support you in taking time out for yourself and taking care of yourself.
Toxic people, however, would stop you from doing this and insist that you putting yourself first and not blindly destroying your mental and physical health for them is selfish. This is one of the most toxic things someone can do. Toxic people simply don’t let the other person take care of their mental health and take time out for themselves, just because they feel that they’re entitled to the other person’s time and attention.

Don’t let anyone hurt your emotional and mental wellbeing. Nobody is entitled to your time and attention more than you. Take care of yourself. You should always be at the top of your priority list.
