A narcissist doesn’t want you to talk about the relationship with others because it threatens their control over the narrative. Narcissists want you to believe that their version of the events is the only truth because it helps them to keep you in the narcissistic fog. When you talk to others about your relationship, they fear you may begin to see that the narcissist’s behavior is not normal or healthy. You may realize that you aren’t the crazy one. This can lead to feelings of confusion, doubt, and even rebellion against the narcissist. Additionally, if others begin to question the narcissist’s behavior, it can threaten their image of themselves as infallible.

This can result in the narcissist becoming defensive or even lashing out at you for betraying them by sharing personal details of the relationship. For these reasons, they always insist on keeping the relationship matters within the relationship and not discussing them outside. Talking to others about your relationship is the key step in gaining perspective on the situation and seeking the support and validation you need to leave a toxic and abusive relationship. However, it’s important to be cautious about who you confide in because flying monkeys; you do not know who is on their side.
