 Number 2: Being compared to someone greater than them.

 For narcissists, embarrassment is not a desirable suit to wear; that is why they tend to be keen on details of their looks and appearances. They believe that if they appear neat and clean, others will view them as successful people and they will be able to cover up what they lack. They might think that pretend greatness will become a reality if people believe it to be true.

 That may have been their take on the saying, “Fake it until you make it,” but they couldn’t have been more wrong about that. By doing this, narcissists might have been building an empire without the proper foundations. That is why when someone more capable than them comes into the picture, a single complement towards that person will cause them to shake in fear. Their empire will collapse with nothing left but the ruins of the narcissists.

 Narcissists are competitive individuals, but when they get compared with someone who exudes true power, they would retract into their inner shells and wallow in their inferiority. Other narcissists might dare to challenge the latter. Still, it will be better if they just stay silent in a corner to avoid embarrassment.

 As I’ve said earlier, embarrassment is not a desirable suit for narcissists to wear; they don’t like to appear like a fool in front of a crowd. For them, humiliation is a form of vulnerability, and that’s what all narcissists hate to feel. If you want to shut a narcissist down with their nonsense, you can grab someone who can do it to them; that will surely make them take a step back in advancing toward you.
